- Hi. One Islam.
- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious
- , the Most Merciful. Peace be upon you,
- and Allah's mercy and blessings. Praise
- be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
- Abundant, good, and blessed praise, as
- our Lord loves and is pleased with. O
- Allah, send prayers, peace, and
- blessings upon our master Muhammad, and
- upon his family and companions, and
- grant them peace. Good morning,
- brothers and sisters, viewers, and
- listeners of Rasil wherever you are.
- How are you? I am Firman Muslim Tahir,
- accompanying you all this morning in
- this new program. Our first program is
- to discuss and dissect a book. A book
- written by one of the great scholars in
- Indonesia, the book of Hadratus Syekh
- Hasyim Asy'ari. Praise be to Allah, our
- guests, our ustaz, are already here
- with us; the first is Ustaz Fawas
- Fauzan. Peace be upon you, Ustaz.
- Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy
- and blessings.
- And the second is Kiai Muhammad
- Saifurrahman Abdur Rauf. Peace be upon
- you, Kiai.
- Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy
- and blessings. Now, I will pass the
- time and floor to Ustaz Fawas, who has
- brought quite a thick book, Ustaz.
- Very well. In the name of Allah, the
- Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace
- be upon you all, and Allah's mercy and
- blessings.
- Peace be upon you. Praise be to Allah,
- Lord of the worlds, and peace and
- blessings be upon the master of the
- messengers, the leader of the pious,
- the leader of the radiant and bright,
- the intercessor for the sinners, our
- master and patron, Muhammad,
- and upon his pure family and honorable
- companions, may Allah Ta'ala be pleased
- with the Ansar and the Muhajirin who
- followed them in goodness until the Day
- of Judgment. Glory to You, we have no
- knowledge except what You have taught
- us; You are the All-Knowing, the Wise.
- And there is no power nor strength
- except by Allah, the Most High, the
- Almighty. My Lord, expand for me my
- chest, and ease for me my task, and
- untie the knot from my tongue, that
- they may understand my speech. Our Lord
- , grant us from Yourself mercy and
- prepare for us from our affair right
- guidance. Our Lord, increase us in
- knowledge. Our Lord, grant us wisdom
- and join us with the righteous, and
- grant us a reputation of honor among
- the later generations, and praise be to
- Allah, Lord of the worlds. Brothers and
- sisters, Muslim men and women, students
- of religious schools, and members of
- Nahdlatul Ulama. Praise be to Allah,
- this morning, at the invitation of the
- owner and director of Madrasah Umat,
- Ustaz Firman Muslim Tahir. I am here
- before the viewers and listeners of
- Radio and TV Silaturahim, or Rasil TV,
- and also Radio Rasil AM 720. Together
- with our guest, K.H. Muhammad
- Saifurrahman Abdur Rauf, caretaker of
- the Al-Muhajirin Islamic Boarding
- School, North Jakarta. Praise be to
- Allah, this morning, with the
- permission of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala
- , we can begin the inaugural study,
- dissecting and reviewing the scholarly
- works of Hadratus Syekh K.H. Muhammad
- Hasyim bin Kiai Asy'ari, known as Mbah
- Hasyim, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama.
- Now, this is a compilation collected by
- one of his grandsons, K.H. Muhammad
- Ishamuddin Hadziq, better known as Gus
- Isham. The grandson from the daughter
- of Hadratus Syekh K.H. Muhammad Hasyim
- Asy'ari collected many essays or
- booklets, small and large, pages of
- Hadratus Syekh's teachings and his
- writings. They were collected into a
- book he named Irsyadus Sari. Yes, the
- name of this book is Irsyadus Sari fi
- Musonnafat Syekh Hasyim Asy'ari. This
- is a collection of books authored by
- Hadratus Syekh, collected by his
- grandson, edited by him, and translated
- into the Pegon script, or what we call
- Javanese-Arabic, translated into
- Javanese-Arabic. becoming a collection
- called Irsyadus Sari. Indeed, this book
- can be considered rare, and perhaps
- many traditional Islamic boarding
- schools that follow the manhaj of
- Hadratus Syekh K.H. Muhammad Hasyim
- Asy'ari and are part of the Nahdlatul
- Ulama organization are not even aware
- of it.
- Oh, I see. They don't just not read it;
- they don't even know that Hadratus
- Syekh authored works like this. Even
- though I haven't read his various books
- in detail from beginning to end, this
- illustrates the vastness of Hadratus
- Syekh's thinking and his mastery,
- particularly in the field of hadith,
- for which he is renowned. Hadratus
- Syekh K.H. Muhammad Hasyim Asy'ari was
- among the remaining scholars who
- received an academic sanad, having read
- the Sahih al-Bukhari from start to
- finish under one of the Nusantara
- scholars teaching in the holy land of
- Mecca. He was from the hometown of
- Indonesia's former president, Mr. SBY,
- a region in Pacitan named K.H., or
- better known as Sheikh Mahfud bin
- Abdullah at-Turmusi from Pacet—
- apologies, from Pacitan, East Java. So,
- Hadratus Syekh took his hadith sanad
- from him because he was someone who
- possessed a chain of scholarly
- transmission for reading hadith books,
- especially Sahih al-Bukhari, that was
- very close to the author himself. Now,
- this Hadratus Syekh K.H. Muhammad
- Hasyim Asy'ari spent approximately 6 to
- 7 years in Mecca. He studied there,
- deepening his knowledge in ulumul
- hadith, then ulumul fiqh, and various
- other sharia sciences. Naturally, in
- these books, he poured out his thoughts
- , especially those uniquely focused on
- unity. Especially since Radio Rasil or
- TV Rasil, and of course Ustaz Firman
- who leads the madrasah umat, really
- want to ground the Quranic concepts
- within society. If we look at many of
- Hadratus Syekh Muhammad Hasyim
- Asy'ari's writings, he invites people
- —or perhaps in our terms, guides
- public opinion—to return to the Quran
- and Sunnah. So, he is not just known as
- a person associated with tarekat,
- tahlilan, tawasulan, and pilgrimages.
- No. No. He was an expert in the field
- of hadith. It's just that somehow,
- among the Nahdliyin to this day, he is
- more popularly known as someone who
- simply possesses karamah. And tarekat,
- yes. Even though, if we look at his
- writings, they demonstrate his breadth
- of knowledge in sharia fields beyond
- tafsir, ulumul hadith, and ulumul fiqh
- along with its ushul. So, actually, if
- I may express my gratitude to Ustaz
- Firman and, of course, the mouthpiece,
- which is
- Rasil, through this madrasah umat and
- Rasil. Perhaps this is the first time
- an Islamic radio station has taken it
- upon itself to read, dissect, and study
- the books of Hadratus Syekh; a radio
- whose icon is a cleric who invites
- people to a unified Islam. But these
- thoughts of Hadratus Syekh really need
- to be published. Thank you so much. If
- we may pray for the madrasah umat and
- Ustaz Firman in particular, may the
- reward...
- Yes, of course, this is a conduit, a
- medium, in the sense that it’s like
- this: when the Nahdliyin community
- becomes aware and willing to re-examine
- Hadratus Syekh's thoughts directly from
- his books, because if we rely on
- secondhand sources, how else would we
- truly know someone's thoughts?
- From the books.
- From the books that summarize his
- written lectures, or perhaps books like
- this one. Subhanallah, hopefully the
- brothers and sisters, the students of
- Nahdliyin, will be moved to return to
- classical Islamic boarding schools,
- especially the NU boarding schools.
- Come on, let’s unpack them, dissect
- them, and re-study the books written by
- Hadratus Syekh so we can understand his
- thoughts directly.
- Are his works not currently mandatory
- reading and study materials in
- NU boarding schools?
- NU boarding schools,
- that is the homework.
- Hopefully, through Radio Rasil, TV
- Rasil, and Madrasah Umat. Well, all the
- people must be embraced, right? We need
- to find a way for NU boarding schools
- to make these books mandatory. For
- example, he has a book called Adabul
- Alim Wal Muta'allim. Now, one of our
- teachers, Sayyidul Habib Umar bin
- Muhammad bin Salim bin Hafiz, was
- willing to study it directly via live
- streaming, which was watched by NU
- leaders, administrators, members, and
- students at the PBNU office. He has,
- Habib Umar bin Hafiz has a monthly
- schedule to study it; he is the pioneer
- among the Habaib. Just Habib Umar bin
- Hafiz—well, there might be others in
- Betawi—but here at Rasil and PBNU,
- through a live stream from Darul
- Mustafa, Habib bin Hafiz studies and
- dissects Hadratus Syekh’s book,
- Adabul Alim Wal Muta'allim. Yes, it is
- even more profound than Ta'limul
- Muta'allim, which is currently the
- mandatory textbook in NU boarding
- schools. So, in these NU boarding
- schools, Brother Iman, Ustadz Firman,
- there is a book called*Ta'limul
- Muta'allim*and*Thariqut Ta'allum*, this
- book is mandatory reading in NU
- boarding schools because it discusses
- the etiquette of a student toward their
- teacher, a teacher toward their student
- ; essentially, the etiquette
- surrounding knowledge and the pursuit
- of knowledge. Now, Hadratus Syekh has a
- fairly thick book called Adabul Alim
- Wal Muta'allim. His book is about 109
- pages long. 109 pages is not a small
- amount, is it? In the end, Habib Umar
- bin Hafiz was entrusted to teach this
- at PBNU. Now, the second book is what
- we will study this morning. Hopefully,
- this can be a routine.
- Amen.
- And hopefully, brothers and sisters,
- students, once we decide—since
- Hadratus Syekh has written
- approximately 12 or 13 titles—we will
- eventually select one book. We will
- provide the title of the book so that
- you can look for it. If you can't find
- it, contact Ustadz Firman and just
- order a photocopy or something.
- Find it, that's how.
- If you find it, it is indeed rare. We
- actually received this from a Kiai, may
- Allah reward him with the best, named
- K.H. Muhyiddin Ishaq, the caretaker of
- the Miftahul Ulum Islamic Boarding
- School, a Betawi Kiai. And is he active
- in Nahdlatul Ulama, or in what
- organization? Nahdlatul Ulama. He
- gifted this to me because I had tried
- searching everywhere, even ordering it
- from East Java, but it was out of print
- ; this is a new edition. Even this is
- already full of, what do you call it?
- Notes.
- Notes on the meaning, 'makna gandul' as
- the Javanese call it, or what we call
- Arabic Pegon.
- Yes, Arabic Pegon. So, interpreting it
- in Javanese using Arabic script, or
- Arabic-Malay as we call it. Hopefully,
- all of this serves as inspiration and
- motivation for our friends, especially
- the muhibbin (devotees) of Hadratus
- Syekh K.H. Muhammad Hasyim Asy'ari, and
- also for the students active in Jamiah
- Nahdlatul Ulama or those who follow the
- NU school of thought to dig deeper. In
- other words, to truly become Nahdliyin
- in essence. To become a true NU member
- in the real sense. Not just in name or
- hitching a ride on the NU vehicle,
- while having a mindset that isn't
- Nahdliyin. Because when we read the
- thoughts of Hadratus Syekh, subhanallah
- , there are several books that provide
- exactly that. Later we will read a bit
- of his biography, which will be a
- blessing for us all. Essentially, thank
- you. May Allah reward Islam and the
- Muslims, especially the Nahdliyin and
- Nahdlatul Ulama, for Madrasah Umat and
- Radio Silaturahim, and Rasil TV for
- providing the time so that Hadratus
- Syekh's book can be read here. Who
- knows, maybe some friends who are
- active in or follow the manhaj of K.H.
- Ahmad Dahlan in Muhammadiyah might be
- willing to send a book written by K.H.
- Ahmad Dahlan. Who knows, we might be
- able to dissect that on Rasil too,
- right? So, these are major
- organizations, NU and Muhammadiyah, and
- indeed Hadratus Syekh Muhammad Hasyim
- Asy'ari and K.H. Ahmad Dahlan were
- fellow boarding students. These two
- founders of these organizations were
- friends in the Islamic boarding school,
- friends in Mecca. And what made them
- different was that Hadratus Syekh K.H.
- Hasyim Asy'ari returned to his village
- in the Jombang area, which was
- underdeveloped at the time. His village
- was still very rural, "Babat Alas" as
- the Javanese say. While K.H. Ahmad
- Dahlan went straight into the city in
- Yogyakarta. That alone made their
- thinking different. Naturally, the way
- one conveys a module or a concept to
- people in a rural area with an 'abangan
- ' mindset is different from someone who
- enters the middle of an urban area.
- That is just a little bit of the
- picture. Thank you, Ustaz Firman.
- May Allah grant blessings to us all. As
- for the scientific chain (sanad) of
- this book, Ustaz Fauzan, who is your
- connection, Ustaz?
- Oh, masyaallah.
- Some people ask, if someone discusses
- knowledge, the sanad must be clear,
- right, Ustaz?
- Very well. In terms of the sanad, the
- chain of knowledge from me back to
- Hadratus Syekh K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari, is,
- of course, what shall I say? Not direct
- . Because he passed away in 1947.
- I wasn't even born in '74. He passed
- away in '47. So, I obtained this chain,
- this scholarly chain, or at least the
- tabarukan diploma from Hadratus Syekh,
- through two paths. The first is the
- paternal path from my father. My father
- was a student of K. H. Idris Kamali and
- K. H. Syuri Badawi. Now, Idris Kamali
- was a cleric from Cirebon, from the
- Kempek area. He studied at Tebu Ireng.
- He was then taken as a son-in-law by
- Hadratus Syekh K. H. Hasyim Asy'ari.
- And it just so happened that those who
- continued the relay of teaching and
- education were his sons-in-law,
- Hadratus Syekh. As it happens, none of
- his sons became popularly known for
- mastering the scholarship possessed by
- Hadratus Syekh. For example, there was
- his son K. H. Wahid Hasyim, the father
- of K. H. Abdurrahman Wahid, Gus Dur.
- Then K. H. Yusuf Hasyim, K. H. Khalid
- Hasyim. And then there was the late K.
- H. Salahuddin Wahid; these sons of
- Hadratus Syekh were not known for
- continuing the relay of Sharia
- knowledge mastered by Hadratus Syekh.
- It was his sons-in-law who were more
- famous. Yes.
- Including Kiai. Idris Kamali from
- Cirebon. Our father, Buya Ghazali
- Musanif, studied under K. H. Idris
- Kamali. Kiai Idris Kamali took from
- Hadratus Syekh K. H. Hasyim Asy'ari.
- Then there is also another path from
- his student, one of his main students,
- Kiai Syuri Badawi, whose students
- include Ustaz Ahmad Sanusi, who also
- studied under Kiai Syuri Badawi. Then
- Kiai Syuri Badawi studied under
- Hadratus Syekh K. H. Hasyim Asy'ari;
- among the famous students of K. H.
- Syuri Badawi was K. H. Ali Mustafa
- Yaqub. He was famous in the field of
- Hadith.
- Yes. So that is the paternal path. I
- took it from my father, Buya Ghazali,
- who took it from Kiai Idris Kamali, who
- took it from Hadratus Syekh K. H.
- Hasyim Asy'ari. Meaning, I only
- received the diploma. Yes. Then, from
- my teacher's side, I studied under
- Hadratus Syekh K. H. Mbah Ahmad Marzuqi
- Zahid, one of the caretakers of the
- Langitan Widang Tuban Islamic boarding
- school. He, Kiai Ahmad Marzuqi Zahid,
- obtained his scholarly chain and
- studied specifically under K. H. Hasyim
- Asy'ari. So this is the connecting link
- here.
- However, as for Hadratus Syekh K. H.
- Hasyim Asy'ari, his scholarly lineage
- is truly vast, with many teachers; God
- willing, I would like to ask permission
- to share a bit of his biography.
- Yes, Ustaz.
- Please do.
- Go ahead, Ustaz. Go ahead.
- Very well. Brothers and sisters,
- students, I will read a little bit
- about the biography of Hadratus Syekh
- K. H. Muhammad Hasyim Asy'ari. His
- well-known name is Hadratus Syekh K. H.
- Hasyim Asy'ari. But his actual name was
- Muhammad Hasyim. Asy'ari was his father
- , Kiai Asy'ari, son of Kiai Abdul Wahid
- , son of Kiai Abdul Halim. Well, Mbah
- Abdul Halim is better known in the
- history of the archipelago as Prince
- Benowo.
- So, Kiai Hasyim is a grandson or
- great-grandson of Prince Benowo. Prince
- Benowo was the son of Mbah Abdurrahman,
- better known by his nickname Joko
- Tingkir, or even more famously as
- Sultan Hadi Wijaya. Mbah Abdurrahman
- was the son of Mbah Abdullah, known as
- Prabu Wijaya V. Son of Abdul Aziz, son
- of Abdul Fattah, son of Maulana Ishaq,
- also known as Sunan Bonang, who was the
- father of Raden Ainul Yaqin, popularly
- known as Sunan Giri. So, Mbah Hasyim is
- indeed a descendant of Sunan Giri from
- both his father's and mother's sides.
- Gresik. Now, because of the Javanese
- language, the pronunciation is a bit
- distinct. Because if people say it in
- Betawi, it's Gresik. But since this is
- Javanese, it becomes Gresik.
- Gresik.
- Now, a descendant of Sunan Giri. Where
- is Giri? In Gresik, yes. On a hill
- called Bukit Giri. He was born in a
- village called Gedang Village. Gedang
- is a village where there were many
- banana plantations. A village north of
- the city of Jombang. Born on Tuesday,
- the 24th of Dhu al-Qi'dah in the year
- 1387. Coinciding with February 14, 1871
- . This is a bit of a, what do you call
- it, a joke. So, if there are NU people
- celebrating February 14, it's not
- Valentine's.
- Not at all.
- It is Mbah Hasyim's birthday. For NU,
- the 14 th—
- If NU people hold, for instance, a
- party or a thanksgiving event or
- something, on February 14, they aren't
- celebrating Valentine's; don't get it
- wrong, they are celebrating the
- birthday of
- Mbah Hasyim.
- Mbah Hasyim, subhanallah. He grew up
- under the guidance of his father, Kiai
- Asy'ari, studying the Quran and even
- memorizing it from an early age. Pay
- attention, we as NU members, Mbah
- Hasyim mastered the Quran since he was
- little. Now, almost everywhere in NU,
- for some reason, there seems to be a
- dichotomy. So, if you want to be what?
- A Hafiz Quran, you don't master the
- yellow books. If you master the yellow
- books, you can't master the Quran.
- The Quran.
- In fact, in quotation marks, it's as if
- now—
- Tahfiz Quran is a characteristic of our
- Salafi friends or something like that.
- Whereas Hadratus Syekh mastered the
- Quran from his early childhood. Because
- the Quran is the door to all goodness;
- everything starts from there. Hopefully
- , we Nahdiyin members, and Muslims in
- general, can follow the example of
- Hadratus Syekh by mastering the Quran
- from an early age, including its
- recitation, tartil, and memorization.
- Alright. Then he also memorized various
- books, starting from the small ones
- known as Safinatun Najah and so on.
- Then, as he grew into his teens, he
- continued his studies at pesantren.
- Leaving his father's place, where to?
- To the famous pesantren in East Java at
- that time. The ones famous in East Java
- back then. For example, the Sono
- Pesantren and the Siwalan Pesantren,
- both located in the Sidoarjo region of
- East Java. Then he moved again to the
- Langitan Widang Tuban Islamic boarding
- school. Where I studied before.
- Yes. So, Hadratus Syekh Hasyim Asy'ari
- studied at the Langitan pesantren. Our
- teacher, Romo or Mbah Ahmad Marzuki
- Zaid, studied under Kiai Hasyim there.
- So, Hadratus Syekh studied at Langitan.
- And later, his student named Ahmad
- Marzuki Zaid studied at Tebuireng under
- Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari. Then he moved
- again to further his knowledge. Further
- his knowledge where? To a pesantren in
- the Bangkalan area, led by a great
- scholar, one of God's saints, known as
- a man of miracles, K. H. Khalil
- Bangkalan in Madura, yes. Then, in
- around 1892, how old was he then? He
- was about 20 years old, yes. He left
- again for the holy city of Mecca to
- perform Hajj and stayed there for about
- 6 to 7 years to study Islamic sciences.
- So just his time in boarding schools
- was 27 years, approximately 27 years
- seeking knowledge. Subhanallah. He
- studied there until 1899. Then he
- returned. He acquired knowledge from
- great scholars in Mecca, especially
- scholars from the Nusantara.
- Yes.
- It was truly the golden age of
- Nusantara scholars teaching at Masjidil
- Haram. Nowadays, it cannot be
- controlled by just one group. It wasn't
- open like that before. Whoever had the
- expertise was given a place to teach.
- Who were they? Among them was Syekh
- Nawawi Al-Jawi, who was...Syekh Nawawi
- Al-Bantani.
- Yes. From Banten, Serang, Banten. He
- studied under him; Hadratus Syekh
- studied various books with Syekh Nawawi
- Al-Bantani. Then another teacher was
- Syekh Khatib Al-Minangkabawi, a person
- from Minang—we are both Minang people
- , right? Of Minang descent, that is.
- Minangkabau used to be known for its
- scholars.
- Now, it is just as it is. There has
- started to be what you call...
- Degradation, a decline.
- A decline.
- Lailahaillallah. Yes.
- Back then, Syekh Khatib Al-Minangkabawi
- was also a khatib at the Haram Mosque.
- Then he studied with Syekh Syuaib bin
- Abdurrahman, covering many books,
- including studying with the Mufti of
- Mecca, the Maliki Mufti in particular,
- namely Assayid Abbas bin Abdul Aziz.
- Al-Maliki Al-Hasani, the grandfather of
- Prof. Dr. Abuya Sayid Muhammad bin
- Alawi Al-Maliki. So it’s Muhammad bin
- Alawi bin Abbas bin Abdul Aziz.
- Hadratus Syekh K. H. Hasyim Asy'ari's
- chain of knowledge connects to Sayid
- Abbas Al-Maliki. Abbas bin Abdul Aziz.
- There is Abbas bin Alawi,
- the younger brother of Abuya Muhammad.
- Now, this Abbas is his grandfather. So,
- Sayid Abbas bin Alawi bin Abbas. Kiai
- Hasyim Hadratus Syekh studied under
- Sayid Abbas bin Abdul Aziz Al-Maliki
- Al-Hasani. So his chain of knowledge is
- also connected, Ustaz.
- Subhanallah. Who doesn't know Sayid
- Abbas? An expert in Hadith, of the
- Maliki school. The Maliki school of
- jurisprudence. Known for his expertise,
- and he was the Maliki Mufti there. And
- Hadith.
- A Maliki mufti, but his student is a
- Shafi'i. Ustaz.
- His student is a Shafi'i. Syafi'i and
- Asy'ari. At the same time, his name was
- also Muad Hasyim Asy'ari. Subhanallah.
- Studying, taking courses in the fields
- of Hadith, Usul, Quranic studies, and
- so on. Then studying specifically, even
- completing the Sahih al-Bukhari from
- beginning to end. Some people just read
- the beginning, middle, and end, then
- get an ijazah or sanad. Not him.
- Hadratus Syekh studied with his
- teachers from the very beginning of
- Bukhari to the end, analyzing
- everything.
- Analyzing it—the term used is 'qaraa'
- , not 'samaa'. Not just listening, but
- reading. There are ijazahs for
- listening, for blessings, but he truly
- studied Bukhari from start to finish.
- We hope that many young NU figures and
- students will follow in the footsteps
- of Hadratus Syekh Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari
- by studying with many teachers.
- Currently, there is a common ailment in
- the world of Islamic boarding schools,
- even among us, where students sometimes
- idolize their teachers too much. As if
- there are no other teachers who are
- smarter than their own. But in the past
- , he was willing to study with anyone.
- Thus, his perspective was broad. Right.
- He studied Sahih Bukhari and the books
- of the Ashabus Sunan under Kiai Mahfud
- bin Abdullah Turmusi, covering various
- sciences of Hadith, linguistics,
- literature, and many others. And he
- didn't just listen; he took notes,
- transcribed, verified, and so on. Then
- he returned to Indonesia in 1899. He
- then preached, taught, initiated good
- works, and wrote books. When did he
- return? In 1899, he opened the Tebu
- Ireng Islamic boarding school in
- Jombang. He also opened the Salafiyah
- Syafi'iyah Madrasah. The Tebu Ireng
- boarding school was opened on the 26th
- of Rabiul Awal, 1317 Hijri, which
- corresponds to 1899 AD. Then he
- continued by opening the Salafiyah
- Syafi'iyah madrasah. Teaching there. He
- had many students; people came from
- everywhere to study with him. In 1344
- Hijri, specifically on the 16th of
- Rajab, 1926 AD, he founded the
- Nahdlatul Ulama organization together
- with his fellow scholars. Among them
- was K.H. Wahab Hasbullah, the founder
- of the Tambak Beras boarding school in
- Jombang as well. Then K.H. Bisri
- Syansuri. Syansuri Badawi was his
- student. This one is K.H. Bisri.
- Syansuri was his friend. He was Gus
- Dur's grandfather on his mother's side.
- The founder of the Denanyar boarding
- school in Jombang. Then K.H. As'ad
- Samsul Arifin of the Situbondo boarding
- school, and many other scholars from
- Java. And the Jam'iyah Nahdlatul Ulama
- was founded. Note the concept of this
- Jam'iyah Nahdlatul Ulama. This
- socio-religious organization was
- founded with the goal of uniting
- Muslims in holding firmly to the Quran
- and Sunnah. Subhanallah. NU was founded
- to motivate and invite all Muslims to
- gather, unite, and hold fast under the
- guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah.
- So, first, let's look at the Quran in
- one of the books called the Mukadimah
- Qonun Asasi of the Nahdlatul Ulama
- organization. There is a book, well,
- actually there are two books. The first
- one is the Basic Law. The basic law for
- the founding of NU.
- It all begins with the guidance of the
- Quran first. Then 40 hadiths for that
- as well. So this illustrates Hadratus
- Syekh's thinking, inviting Muslims to
- hold fast to the Scripture first. So at
- the very least, hopefully this can be
- emulated by friends who are active in
- the PBNU or LDNU organizations. Try to
- follow Hadratus Syekh's example; every
- time he makes a statement, he first
- checks if there is guidance from the
- Quran. That's how it is, because why
- was NU founded? To invite people to
- hold fast to
- the Quran. First, the Quran. Then the
- Sunnah.
- Now, what is the Sunnah? Sunnah. Sunnah
- is the Prophet's application of the
- Quran's guidance. That is what Sunnah
- means. If one of its sources is hadith
- narrations, the primary and main
- requirement is that those hadiths must
- not contradict the Quran. That is what
- is called Sunnah. It's not just any
- authentic hadith, no. A hadith that is
- good in terms of its narration and its
- content does not clash or contradict
- the Quran.
- This Quran means holding fast to the
- Quran and the Sunnah. It is not holding
- fast to the Quran and hadiths that
- contradict or clash with
- the Quran. That's not it. This is NU.
- Look at this. Subhanallah. I am also
- sure that if there were works by
- Hadratus Syekh K.H. Ahmad Dahlan, the
- grand concept would certainly be like
- this too. But how do we apply that
- theory, that principle? So every
- statement issued by an organization
- that invites people to hold fast to the
- Quran and Sunnah must be verified
- against the Quran first.
- Is that understanding correct? Yes,
- only then should it be brought before
- others. Exactly. Right. Then, what else
- is the purpose? The third purpose for
- the founding of Jamiah Nahdlatul Ulama
- is to steer Muslims away from deviation
- and heresy. See, it aligns with Sharia
- rules: Quran, Sunnah, avoid bid'ah.
- So, what is the benchmark for this
- deviation and heresy? It is when
- something is attributed to religion or
- Sharia, yet it clashes with the Sunnah
- or the Quran. Then the first and
- primary benchmark is
- the Quran. This must be understood by
- our brothers and sisters, the students
- of Jamiah Nahdlatul Ulama. The fourth
- is "wa tuharriduhum 'ala al-jihad li
- i'la-i kalimatillah." Encouraging the
- Islamic community to always strive in
- jihad to uphold the Word of Allah. Not
- for a group, not for others, but for
- what? The Word of Allah. So the basic
- concept of the founding of Nahdlatul
- Ulama by Hadratus Syekh K.H. Muhammad
- Hasyim Asy'ari was to invite Muslims to
- hold fast to the Quran and Sunnah,
- avoid deviation and heresy, and perform
- jihad to uphold the Word of Allah. How
- can people now say "Allahu Akbar" while
- being anti-NU? How is that? That is the
- picture of it. Only after that did he
- establish Nahdlatul Ulama and spend his
- time writing books. Subhanallah. May I
- add the names of his books?
- Sure. Sure, Ustaz.
- Subhanallah. Very well. Well, there are
- three main legacies left behind by
- Hadratus Syekh. The first is Nahdlatul
- Ulama, oh excuse me, Tebu Ireng Islamic
- boarding school,
- which currently has thousands of
- students. Then, Jamiyah Nahdlatul Ulama
- , which is the visible, written
- manifestation. This is the one that is
- rarely used. These two here.
- Good writings. How many works did he
- produce? Many. Many. You could say
- dozens. Yes. Right. Although perhaps
- due to one or two reasons. Essentially,
- they have not yet become mandatory
- reading in NU boarding schools. Let's
- introduce them now, if they haven't
- been already. If they have, let's
- reinforce and re-examine them. Right.
- For what purpose? To measure the truth
- of every human writing against the
- Quran. That's how it is, right? This is
- also an invitation from Hadratus Syekh,
- Kiai Hasyim Asy'ari. Now, given the
- breadth of his knowledge and his
- precision in understanding, many books
- authored by him emerged. The first is
- titled*Adabul Alim wal Muta'alim*...A
- title so profound. A book that explains
- etiquette and manners. Pardon, not "
- ethics." Using the term "ethics" as a
- translation for "adab" is incorrect. "
- Ethics" comes from Greek and means a
- mask. It’s just image-building, then.
- But "adab" is not. What is "adab"?
- Courtesy. Manners that align with
- Sharia guidelines. Adab concerning a
- teacher and a student, where each is
- necessary according to their position.
- And the student, according to their own
- status or position as well. The second
- one, the*Ta'liqat*, what does it
- contain? It contains "rudud." What is
- the meaning of "rudud"?
- Counter-arguments, right? Countering,
- yes. So even back then, he was already
- countering; he countered a book that
- contained critiques of Nahdlatul Ulama,
- written by a Kiai named Syekh Abdullah
- Yasin from Pasuruan. And the content...
- What? Kiai Abdul Yasin's writing mocked
- the ideological concepts of Nahdlatul
- Ulama, and Hadratus Syekh responded
- with knowledge—in writing. This is a
- lesson here. So there is no need for
- fighting or bullying,
- if there is an issue, especially
- character assassination. Pardon me, I
- am very sorry. On average, in the world
- of Islamic boarding schools—and yes,
- it also happens within NU circles,
- which is truly unfortunate. If they
- don't agree with someone's line of
- thought,
- character assassination,
- character assassination, defamation,
- destruction—just like the issues
- nowadays where NU is also constantly
- slandered with various accusations,
- right? Even though they don't know the
- facts, they haven't heard it directly,
- yet they just jump to judgment.
- Hadratus Syekh taught us that if there
- is something you disagree with, respond
- with writing, if the original form was
- in writing. This is his second work.
- The third, he has a work titled*
- At-Tanbihatul Wajibah liman Yashna'ul
- Maulida bil Munkarat*. You see, NU is
- known for the tradition of holding
- Mawlid celebrations. Hadratus Syekh
- wrote several "tanbihat." What does
- that mean? Important warnings about
- what? The sinful acts found during
- Mawlid celebrations. So, how about we
- read this one since it's the month of
- Mawlid, right? This is the founder of
- NU, you know. There’s something here
- about attacking. Although the language
- is harsh, "attacking" in the sense of
- offering advice. Advice, giving a
- warning to the Nahdliyin or those who
- love the Prophet who hold Mawlid
- celebrations but mixed with illicit
- acts. Look at how crowded it is now,
- right?
- Yeah.
- Reading the Mawlid. Men and women are
- just...
- mixed together, dancing and swaying.
- Yeah, high-fiving, all sorts of things,
- men and women mixed together. Now, if
- we have time later, we will dissect it,
- we will dissect that. Since it’s the
- month of Mawlid, right, or how should
- we put it? Fourth, he has a written
- work titled Arisalatul Jamiah. What is
- that book explaining? About issues
- surrounding death. People passing away,
- around that, about death, tahlil,
- talkin, and things like that, yes. Wa
- asrati sa'ah, the signs of the day of
- judgment, the nearness of the end times
- , and an explanation of the definition
- of Sunnah and Bid'ah. Ah, usually the
- chapter on Sunnah and Bid'ah is only
- found outside of NU, they say. There
- are some of our brothers, Ikhwan,
- unfortunately, who every day,
- especially during the Mawlid season,
- Rajab season, Muharram season, they
- only study the chapter on Bid'ah.
- Labeling this and that as Bid'ah. This
- Hadratus Syekh also has it. Let's read
- what's inside. See, that's how it is.
- It really should be that in NU boarding
- schools, these books by Hadratus Syekh
- become the main references. At the very
- least, if there are other
- understandings that contradict the NU
- manhaj, there are answers from Hadratus
- Syekh.
- Yes.
- If there’s a correction, accept it
- because Hadratus Syekh also corrected
- things, right? Fifth, a book titled
- Annurul Mubin fi Mahabbati Sayyidil
- Mursalin. Oh, the book is quite thick
- too. What's it called? Annurul Mubin. A
- light that is so clear, shining bright.
- What is it about? About explaining the
- book. About the definition of the
- meaning of loving the Prophet. And
- things related to what? How to follow
- and revive the Sunnah of the Prophet.
- See, it's popular right now among those
- outside NU to "do the Sunnah," right?
- This is Sunnah, that is Sunnah. Here in
- NU, we have this stuff, so please read
- the book. Let's do it together. Where
- should we do it? Whether at the Hasiil,
- at the MU, or at Bubur Subuh, please
- read it. Everything is there, right?
- Sixth, a book, a hasiyah, which is a
- marginal note. Ala Fathirrahman bi
- Sharhi Risalatil Wali Ruslan, by
- Syaikhul Islam Zakaria al-Anshari. So,
- there is a book titled Fathurahman
- written by a great scholar in Egypt at
- that time, a teacher of scholars, and
- he was the Sheikh of Al-Azhar named
- Sheikh Zakaria al-Anshari, with the
- title Syaikhul Islam because of his
- immense knowledge. Now, he provided
- marginal notes on that book. Masyaallah
- . Seventh, the book Adurarul Muntasirah
- fil Masail Tisah Asrah. There is a book
- named Adurar al-muntasirah, meaning
- pearls that are
- er, scattered.
- Er, about 19 issues that explain the
- principles of Tarekat, saints, then er
- things related to the world of Sufism,
- all 19 issues are in there. If
- dissected, it would be truly excellent.
- The eighth is At-Tibyan fi Nahyi
- Muqata'at al-Arham wa al-Aqarab wa
- al-Ikhwan. Well, a book called
- At-Tibyan. If I'm not mistaken, we
- opened it briefly recently. Where? At
- what mosque was it?
- Masjid Raya Bintaro.
- Raya Bintaro Jaya, MRBJ, even if just a
- little bit. What is it about? About the
- explanation of the prohibition of
- severing ties of kinship with relatives
- , friends, and especially fellow
- believers. Then the ninth, Ar-Risalah
- At-Tawhidiyah. A small treatise
- explaining the creed of Ahlusunnah wal
- Jama'ah. Come on, have the NU people
- studied this book yet? Read that book,
- the Creed of Ahlusunnah wal Jama'ah.
- From what is it called? The analytical
- thoughts of Hadratus Syekh K.H. Hasyim
- Asy'ari. Claiming to be NU, claiming to
- be Aswaja, but never reading the book.
- How can the claim be true or not?
- That's how it is. The 10th, Al-Qalaid
- fi Bayani ma Yajibu min al-Aqaid.
- Explaining what? The creeds or beliefs
- that are mandatory to believe regarding
- divinity and so on. And there are many
- more, like the book Al-Mawa'id, the
- treatise Al-Qanun, and what else?
- Muqaddimah, uh, Qanun Asasi li Jam'iyah
- Nahdlatul Ulama. Then Arba'ina Haditsan
- fi Jam'iyah Nahdlatul Ulama and others.
- More than 10 of his writings. Well, he
- passed away, rahimahullah, on the 7th
- of Ramadan in the year 1366 Hijriah,
- coinciding with July 21, 1947. Now,
- when do NU people hold the Haul (
- commemoration) for Hadratus Syekh?
- July 21st.
- July 21st.
- If the birthday is February 14th,
- that's how it is. Ah, so that's it. I
- hope Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala grants
- blessings to us all. Amin ya Rabbal
- Alamin.
- Ustaz, since our time is limited.
- Very well,
- for the next discussion, what book will
- you cover?
- Insyaallah, I will discuss the basic
- concepts of Nahdlatul Ulama.
- So if the brothers and sisters want to
- follow along with this book,
- I
- if you have Ustaz Fawas's phone number,
- contact him directly. If you don't have
- Ustaz Fawas's number, I can tell you,
- you can contact Rasil. Okay. For
- brothers and sisters who want to follow
- the upcoming study on the scientific
- works of Hadratus Syekh Hasyim Asy'ari,
- you can send a WhatsApp to Rasil at
- 0811999720. I will repeat it. For
- brothers and sisters who want to follow
- the upcoming study on the scientific
- works of Hadratus Syekh Hasyim Asy'ari,
- you can send a WhatsApp to 08111999720.
- Insyaallah, we will make copies, Ustaz.
- You can order them.
- So you can order them later,
- handled by the team maybe.
- Good. Insyaallah, we might open it here
- at Rasil. Insyaallah, the book titled
- Muqaddimah Qonun Asasi Li Jam'iyah
- Nahdatul Ulama will later continue to
- the Arba'in Hadith, 40 hadiths about
- the virtues and foundations of
- establishing Jam'iyah Nahdlatul Ulama,
- the Quran and Hadith. Subhanallah,
- complete, right? What do you think, Pak
- Kiai? Do you have any experience, Pak
- Kiai? We are
- Pak Kiai is NU,
- right. I once attended a boarding
- school back at Buntet Pesantren.
- Buntet, Cirebon, right? Yes, my junior
- high was an NU school. Uh-huh.
- There were books published by NU there
- too. But I have forgotten the name of
- the book. Well, it was also studied at
- our school
- back then. Indeed, back then
- back then
- there was a subject in the boarding
- school, at the NU religious school
- there was an NU lesson.
- Uh-huh. A study on Aswaja.
- Nowadays, it's almost gone. Subhanallah
- . Ustadz.
- Hopefully
- hopefully it can be brought back.
- Let's bring it back. No. Amin. Amin.
- Who knows, maybe Rasil can be the
- trigger for the boarding schools, amen.
- And perhaps, if I may, Rasil could
- visit these NU boarding schools and we
- could hold a brief dialogue. Yes.
- Amin. God willing, Ustadz.
- Whether through their organization or
- otherwise, it's up to you.
- Understood. God willing, Ustadz. God
- willing.
- God willing.
- Thank you, Ustadz. Thank you, Kiai, for
- your time.
- This was just the prologue, an opening
- that was truly powerful.
- We haven't even touched the book yet.
- God willing, we will discuss it again
- in the next meeting. I am Firman Muslim
- Tahir, accompanied by Fajar and Kang
- Fahri.
- Fahri is signing off for now. We
- apologize for any words that may have
- been inappropriate. Subhanakallahumma
- wabihamdika ashadu alla ilaha illa anta
- astagfiruka wa atubu ilaih.
- Wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi
- wabarakatuh.
