- Wisma Tunaganda began with the
- initiative of Mrs. Siti Zahra Gunawan,
- the wife of Raden Gunawan, a prominent
- figure in the Islamic movement who
- founded a Muslim orphanage before
- Indonesia's independence, namely in
- 1931. The orphanage's first location
- was on Jalan Prapatan Batavia Centrum,
- which started with two foster children.
- This orphanage then moved two more
- times before occupying two locations.
- The Foundation's Secretariat is on
- Jalan Keramat Raya, Central Jakarta,
- which also serves as a dormitory for an
- orphanage and a Muslim school, and the
- Palsi Gunung social home for the
- disabled on Jalan Raya Bogor, Cimanggis
- , Depok. The four main objectives of
- the Rumah Piatu Muslimin Foundation are
- to help orphans, abandoned children,
- and those with multiple disabilities to
- obtain their rights and have equal
- opportunities to grow and develop.
- Provide free assistance, care,
- education, and Islamic religious
- lessons to orphans, poor and abandoned
- children. Provide social services for
- individuals with social welfare
- problems and develop a service system
- in the field of social welfare
- businesses. The Wisma Tunaganda (
- Multiple Disability Home) specializes
- in providing support, care, and
- rehabilitation for children with
- multiple disabilities or physical and
- mental disabilities. In fact, this home
- is listed as the first social home for
- multiple disabilities in Indonesia.
- Currently, approximately 16 boys and 14
- girls are cared for. Since its
- establishment in March 1975, Wisma Tuna
- Ganda has cared for approximately 91
- children with multiple disabilities.
- Children with special needs or multiple
- disabilities undergo an initial
- assessment, identification, and
- registration before being admitted to
- the Wisma Tunaganda. This initial
- assessment is conducted upon referral
- from a hospital or shelter.
- Identification and registration are
- usually conducted directly by the
- child's parents or family. The child is
- then identified based on their
- background and curriculum vitae. After
- the initial assessment, identification,
- and registration, the child can be
- placed in a shelter or shelter and live
- within the shelter. After that, the
- child becomes part of the shelter, a
- foster child. A further assessment is
- conducted, including an assessment of
- problems and needs. After determining
- the child's condition, support, care,
- and rehabilitation are provided. Our
- development is currently very advanced
- thanks to the help of many
- extraordinary media resources. I admit
- that the media has grown from what, uh,
- communities, associations, alumni, who,
- after coming here to play, usually post
- their events on various media platforms
- , like Facebook and so on. The
- development is certainly increasing, if
- you look at the statistical range, both
- in terms of the number of donors, human
- resources, and the number of children
- coming in and out, sir. So from year 5
- until now, we have had around 105 or
- 110 children who have participated in
- us. We treat them here. Physiotherapy
- is a place for therapy as an effort for
- children to gradually eliminate the
- stiffness or spasms they experience.
- People with disabilities who
- participate in physiotherapy are those
- who experience disorders in gross motor
- development that make them unable to
- lie on their backs, turn over, roll
- over, sit, crawl, crawl, stand, walk,
- jump, and hop. The classroom is a place
- for children at the Palsi Gunung home
- for the multiple disabilities to play
- together with caregivers and teachers
- so they can get used to continuous
- practice and relieve boredom. The
- education provided in the classroom is
- not based on the curriculum of special
- schools. Because all the children at
- the home for the multiple disabilities
- have intellectual or mental
- disabilities, they are taught simple
- things that are easy for them to
- understand, such as speech therapy and
- play therapy. The curriculum is also
- adapted to the conditions of the
- children in the home, and the
- curriculum is created by teachers from
- Kuisma Tunaganda. Medical care in
- providing health services to clients.
- The Palsi Gunung home for the multiple
- disabilities collaborates with nearby
- hospitals and community health centers.
- The home has a health clinic for the
- children in care and the home's staff.
- There is a general practitioner who
- practices once a week to monitor the
- health of the children in the home for
- the multiple disabilities. At the home,
- if any health problems occur among the
- home's employees, they can consult with
- a doctor about their illness. Teguh
- Idadi is one of our oldest children. He
- is now almost 48 years old. Teguh is
- from Cirebon. He was born in 8. He was
- entrusted to his family at the age of
- 7. Indeed, with multiple disabilities,
- severe disabilities, paralysis,
- blindness, deafness, speech impairment,
- and weakness. ee what motor skills ee
- there is a long story that has been
- with Teguh. Because of what? When his
- family left him here ee gradually this
- Tegu was never visited by his family.
- But somehow there was a miracle. Maybe
- because the mother who had entrusted
- Teguh for so long, then got sick before
- passing away, had time to come here to
- see Teguh and left a mandate to his
- younger siblings that Teguh actually
- had older siblings who were indeed in
- stable condition. And thank God, now
- until now Teguh is visited by his
- younger siblings and his older siblings
- . Teguh's condition from the year 5
- with us until now has not changed. But
- thank God this is the healthiest child
- among his other friends. Despite his
- severe condition, with multiple
- disabilities, Teguh can still roll over
- . Teguh Idadi has not made any progress
- whatsoever. He has been receiving basic
- needs since entering the Gunung Palsi
- Ganda Homestay. Every client's basic
- needs, such as clothing, food, and
- shelter, are met and served. Every
- client admitted to the Gunung Palsi
- Ganda Homestay is cared for and cared
- for 24/7. I stay here because I feel
- comfortable, like I'm at home, like I'm
- at home with my family. The family here
- is very close, especially with the
- children. I feel like the children
- still need me, need my help. Social
- work is truly a calling. If there's no
- calling, no matter how hard we try to
- make ourselves comfortable, we still
- won't feel comfortable, we won't be
- able to work wholeheartedly here. Maybe
- I'll still be able to work, still be
- able to smile, maybe only
- half-heartedly. Maybe after a month or
- two, I'll feel a little bored. Ah, like
- this, oh why is it like this, why is it
- like this? There are always complaints.
- Yes. When we first started working here
- , we were definitely trained, right?
- What is it like to be able to mingle
- with the children? That's what makes us
- able to survive here sincerely? Because
- we treat them like our own family, like
- our own children, we don't see their
- shortcomings or their strengths, but we
- see them as our own children. We like
- it when the children are healthy and
- happy. We like it when they are
- children, sometimes they are feverish,
- sick, they can be fussy, right? When
- they are sick. My hope for the children
- is that they stay healthy, always smile
- , and bring happiness to others. I hope
- that this death will be more successful
- , meaning that this foundation can help
- more children. I hope that my children
- are healthy and that they can live a
- regular life, okay. Because that's what
- makes us sad when they see our children
- sick, right? Be grateful for whatever
- circumstances God has given us. That's
- what we should be thankful for, what we
- should enjoy, what we should let go of.
- We only live once. So let's do our best
- for our lives, for our environment, and
- for those around us.
