- Fire. Listeners of Radio Silaturahim
- and viewers of Rasil TV who are blessed
- by Allah. Praise be to Allah, we once
- again express our praise and gratitude
- to the presence of Allah Subhanahu wa
- ta'ala, who always pours out His
- blessings and favors upon us,
- especially the blessing of faith and
- Islam, the blessing of good health, the
- blessing of a long life in obedience,
- including the blessing of our meeting
- this afternoon, even if only through
- the airwaves, in a state of good health
- to carry out one of the obligations
- commanded upon us all, namely seeking
- knowledge. Which, God willing, in this
- afternoon's meeting we will continue
- our study from last week in this
- theology and morality study with the
- theme of*Zikrul Maut*, which is
- remembering death. We pray to Allah
- that whatever we seek and learn, Allah
- grants us understanding, and may Allah
- make the knowledge we obtain beneficial
- for us in the hereafter. Amen, O Lord
- of the worlds. May prayers and peace
- always be poured upon our Prophet
- Muhammad, may Allah bless him and his
- family, his companions, his followers,
- and those who practice his Sunnah,
- listeners of Radio Silaturahim. If we
- talk about the issue of*Zikrul Maut*,
- remembering death, this is a theme that
- is already rare; it is now rare for
- people to remember such things. And
- this is quite understandable. Let alone
- now, Imam Al-Ghazali, may Allah have
- mercy on him, he explained that in our
- time, he said, very few people remember
- death. If it was already like that in
- Imam Ghazali's time, then surely there
- is a reason why it is even more so
- today. Now, listeners of Radio
- Silaturahim, may you be blessed by
- Allah. In this chapter on remembering
- death, there are several sub-topics
- that we will discuss and study. The
- first is about the virtues of
- remembering death as well as how to
- endeavor to cultivate a habit of always
- remembering death. Second, we will
- discuss*tulul amal*, which means having
- long-term worldly aspirations or
- excessive fantasies. Then the third is
- about the agony of death (*sakaratul
- maut*). Likewise, the intensity of that
- agony. The fourth is about the passing
- of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon
- him, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
- And the fifth is about the words of
- those facing death, from the Rightly
- Guided Caliphs and the righteous, which
- we can take as a lesson. Then the sixth
- we will talk about and discuss the
- sayings of those who are*arif billah*(
- those who truly know Allah) regarding
- corpses, the laws of visiting graves,
- and so on. Then the next is what death
- truly is. That is, the essence of death
- . And the last one, the eighth, will
- discuss what can be known or understood
- about death through spiritual unveiling
- in sleep. Now, listeners of Radio
- Silaturahim who are blessed by Allah.
- The first is about remembering death
- and encouraging its frequent
- remembrance, and how to cultivate a
- desire to frequently remember death.
- Indeed, humans are divided into three
- categories in their relationship with
- death. The first is, those whose lives
- are busy, diligently and persistently
- seeking worldly pleasures, adhering to
- and following the deceptions of the
- world and indulging in worldly desires.
- So, for people like this, it is certain
- that their hearts will be heedless of
- remembering death because there is no
- time for it. They are so occupied with
- worldly matters that they forget and
- are unaware that they will actually die
- . Then, if someone reminds them about
- death, they do not like it, yes. They
- dislike it and run away from it. Those
- are the people described by Allah in
- the Quran, in Surah Al-Jumu'ah, if I'm
- not mistaken, verse 8. "Qul innal
- mautalladzi tafirruna minhu fainnahu
- mulaqikum." Say, O Muhammad, "Verily,
- death...""...that you are running away
- from...""...it will surely meet you."
- Indeed, death will come to meet you.
- Yes. So, whoever a person is, willingly
- or unwillingly, running or not, liking
- it or not, they will definitely die.
- Those who want to die will die. Those
- who fear death will also die. The
- healthy will die, and the sick will
- also die. Yes, the believer will die,
- the disbeliever will die, the smart
- will die, and the foolish will also die
- . Therefore, we do not need to ask for
- death, for even if we don't ask, we
- will still die, yes. And we don't need
- to run away from death. Where would you
- run to? Wong kullun nafsin dzaaiqatul
- maut. Everything that has a soul will
- surely die. With corona, you die;
- without corona, you also die. Yes,
- catch corona you die, not catch corona
- you also die. Some even catch corona
- and live, while those who don't catch
- it actually die. So, nowadays many
- people have this extraordinary fear,
- but it's not actually fear of corona.
- The problem is the fear of death. Yes.
- So there was a teacher who once said, "
- Why do people fear venomous snakes?
- What exactly are they afraid of?" Yes.
- Yes. The answer is, because of what is
- it? Because of its venom. Right. Eh,
- because of fear of its bite. Is it true
- that this person is afraid of being
- bitten by a snake? I'm sure it's not
- because of the fear, but because of
- what is it? The venom. Is it true that
- they fear the venom? I'm sure it's not
- the fear of the venom, but the fear of
- the pain. Even if it's venomous, if it
- didn't hurt, you wouldn't be afraid.
- Right. Is it true this person fears the
- pain? No. It is not actually the pain
- they fear. What they truly fear is
- death. Is it true that this person is
- actually afraid of death? Some say no,
- it's not really fear of death. They are
- in love with life, that's what they say
- . Yes. That's why there are efforts in
- China, in America, there was once a
- community where they are trying to find
- a way to revive the dead. Now, that's
- because everyone is afraid of death or
- in love with life, and it's spreading
- not just among ordinary people, but
- also among religious teachers and
- clerics too. Now, this will lead us to,
- "Wow, Ustaz Jazuli, that means you're
- going against them." It's not about
- going against them. It is a fact that
- we are all afraid of death. And this is
- what God says, in the Qur'an it is
- explained, "innal mautalladzi tafiruna
- minhu fa innahu mulaqikum." Al-Ghazali
- says those like this are called
- al-munhamiq. So, people like this, are
- what you call? Are included in the
- words of the Prophet, peace be upon him
- . Man kariha liqa Allah karihallahu
- liqaahu. Who hates it? Who doesn't want
- to meet with Allah? Allah also doesn't
- want to. Allah hates to meet with them.
- Now, this is the first one. If Allah
- doesn't want to meet us, oh, what a
- great loss for us. The second is the
- person who repents. Yes, the person who
- repents from that. So, if a person
- repents, "fa innahu yaksuru min dhikril
- maut." They will often, they will
- remember death frequently, realizing
- that they will die. And they realize
- that everything they have nurtured,
- everything they have sought, not even a
- little bit can be taken with them. King
- Alexander the Great was a king who was
- highly respected by his rivals. By his
- friends, feared by his enemies. He was
- a powerful and wealthy king. When he
- was about to die, he told his family, "
- When I die, please do not wrap my hands
- ." He said that when he was carried and
- placed inside the coffin. "Keep my
- hands outside the coffin." So it was
- done. What was King Alexander the
- Great's intention in doing that? Well,
- he wanted to give advice to his people.
- "Look at all of you, look at your
- mighty king, who was feared by enemies,
- respected by friends, and incredibly
- wealthy.""He is helpless against death.
- " Yes. "Then look at his two hands.""He
- didn't take even a shred of his wealth,
- because he no longer needs it and has
- no ability to take it." This is what
- constitutes his advice to them. And now
- look at how, in our country, starting
- from President Soekarno, President
- Soeharto, and everyone else, heroes and
- villains alike, they all died. However,
- we see that for hundreds or thousands
- of years, some names are still
- remembered. Remembered for their
- kindness, for their contributions. But
- there are also those who, thousands of
- years later, are still remembered for
- their crimes. Oh God, why do we not
- want to learn from this? Fahri, we are
- currently making history, aren't we? We
- are all makers of history. Will our
- life story be written in golden ink or
- in red ink? We are the ones writing it
- ourselves. 10, 20, 30, 50, or 100 years
- from now. Our life history will be read
- by our children and grandchildren, by
- our future generations. Yes, how proud
- our descendants would be if they knew
- that our life history was written in
- golden ink. And how ashamed they would
- be if the opposite were true. No matter
- how cleverly we hide a rotting corpse,
- it will eventually be smelled. No
- matter how great we are at deceiving,
- plotting, and so on, with extraordinary
- packaging through image-building, for
- example, it will all be exposed.
- Because God does not like it when
- people praise hypocrites. Just as God
- does not like, and is not pleased if
- good people are demeaned, they will
- eventually be vindicated by God. Yes,
- who is actually the hypocrite and who
- is actually the true fighter. If we
- cried when we were born, and everyone
- around us laughed—our father,
- grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt,
- all laughed in joy—then resolve
- within ourselves that someday, when we
- return to face God with a smile, all of
- you should be weeping. If necessary,
- flying the flag at half-mast. Why? Well
- , because they feel abandoned by
- someone who had extraordinary merits
- and kindness. And how disgraceful we
- are if, when we die, people are
- grateful. If when we are sick, many
- pray that we die quickly. Oh God. How
- terrible we are if many people pray for
- bad things when we are sick. So, take a
- lesson from things like this, okay?
- Then we prepare ourselves so that when
- we eventually face Allah, we return
- with a smile. Because Allah has already
- given us glad tidings. Yes, "wa hina
- idzin tamurun." When the soul reaches
- the throat, you will all see. See what?
- See the place that will be your final
- destination in the afterlife later. Is
- it Heaven or Hell? Yes. So that is the
- matter regarding "Thab." Now, the
- person who has repented sometimes also
- hates death. Meaning they do not like
- to die. However, not liking to die does
- not mean not wanting to meet Allah. But
- their fear is actually not a fear of
- death itself; rather, they fear the
- loss, the absence of goodness, the lack
- of virtues that are prerequisites for
- meeting Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala. So,
- people like this, God willing, are not
- included in the aforementioned hadith,
- which states that whoever does not like
- to meet Allah, Allah also does not like
- to meet them. They are not included in
- that. So let me illustrate it this way.
- A person who loves, a lover, surely a
- lover knows the time and place to meet
- their beloved. Yes, it must be like
- that. Likewise, a person who loves
- Allah knows when it is time to meet
- Allah. And it is impossible for them to
- forget that. They definitely know when
- the moment to meet Allah will be. Now,
- if the person mentioned before didn't
- like to die, a person who loves Allah
- surely longs to meet Him. That is why
- they really want to die, yes. Why is
- that? Someone who loves surely feels
- longing. For someone longing, there is
- only one cure: meeting. As long as they
- haven't met, that longing will not
- disappear. So, someone who loves Allah
- will definitely feel longing, and we
- cannot meet Allah while we are still
- alive. That is why this third type is
- called the "arif." Now, as for the
- second one I mentioned, the "attah,"
- they also do not like to die. Meaning
- they do not like meeting Allah, but it
- is not that they hate meeting Allah. It
- is because they realize that they do
- not have enough good deeds yet. Yes. So
- , if I were to make an analogy, it
- would be like this: for example, there
- is someone......we love someone we miss
- and really want to meet. Then, it turns
- out they are already not far from us.
- Let's say they are at a terminal here
- in Jakarta. Then they say, "Bro, I am
- already at the Rambutan terminal, God
- willing, or at this station or at
- Cengkareng, at Halim, God willing, in 3
- minutes—uh, 30 minutes—I will
- arrive there." Actually, we are
- incredibly happy that we will meet in
- 30 minutes. But unfortunately, our
- house is a mess, it is messy. It is
- impossible to tidy it up in 30 minutes.
- So, at that moment, we will say, "O
- Allah, why must they come now?" If it
- were tomorrow or the next day, I would
- certainly clean and tidy it up first,
- so that the meeting wouldn't be
- disturbed by, you know, the mess. This
- place would feel serene, extraordinary,
- perfect; but that perfection would be
- ruined by the mess in the house. So,
- it's not that they don't want to meet.
- Now, that is how this repentant person,
- the Taib, is. Sometimes he does not
- like death, but it is not really
- disliking death itself; rather, he
- feels he hasn't yet improved his deeds
- or his heart, so he is certain this
- will disturb his meeting with Allah
- Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. This is what a
- person like this is called. That is why
- he does not fall into the category
- mentioned by the Prophet sallallahu
- alaihi wasallam in his hadith. "Whoever
- dislikes meeting Allah, Allah dislikes
- meeting him." The third one, well, the
- third one is the Arif, the Muhib, the
- person who loves Allah. If a person is
- like this, they will surely always
- remember Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.
- Constantly. And it's not just
- remembering; he truly desires death.
- Why? The issue is the longing I
- mentioned earlier. Because a person who
- loves surely longs for the one they
- love. And this longing will not vanish
- or be cured until they meet. Yes, so do
- not be surprised that many of the Aulia
- desire death. Yes, I already discussed
- this matter back in the chapter on
- Mahabbah. Wait, isn't there a hadith
- where the Prophet forbids us from
- wishing for death? Oh, yes, that is
- correct. But remember, the hadith says,
- "La tatamanna ahadukumul mauta...""Do
- not any of you wish for death," wishing
- for death "li durrin ashabahu," because
- of harm, sickness, or a calamity that
- has befallen them. That is what is not
- allowed. Because one is always poor,
- always struggling, saying, "Oh Allah,
- rather than suffering like this, I'd
- rather just die." This is what is
- forbidden. That is called despair.
- Because one is sick and not recovering,
- so they ask for death. That is not
- right. This one is not sick, not
- struggling, nothing. But because of
- their longing to meet Allah, this is a
- very praiseworthy act. So this is
- clearly a characteristic of those who
- love; it is just like that. Yes. So, as
- for the second person, this Taib, his
- reason is justified. If he does not
- like death, his reason is accepted by
- Allah. Now, for this third one, his
- desire for death is also a reason
- accepted by Allah. Even though the
- Prophet said, "Do not ask for death."
- But because the reason for asking for
- death is longing, then his desire for
- death is good. Ah, that is the first
- point. What is the second? The virtue
- of remembering death. The Prophet
- sallallahu alaihi wa alihi wasallam
- said, "Akthiru min dhikri hadhimil
- ladhdhat." Yes, increase your
- remembrance of the destroyer of all
- pleasures. Because why? Regardless of
- the three types, These three levels of
- people, meaning the remembrance of
- death for these three, well,
- remembering death is always a good
- thing. Even for the first type
- mentioned earlier, why? It has an
- influence on those who are negligent,
- you know, because they are so busy with
- worldly affairs they don't think about
- death. Now, if they happen to remember,
- it will still be good for them, even if
- only for a moment; it has influence and
- value. Although clearly, for the first
- one, as Allah says in the Qur'an, it is
- said that death will surely come to
- meet you. Now, for the second, the
- second characteristic is that they will
- constantly prepare themselves,
- occupying themselves to face death by
- what? Increasing their good deeds. Last
- night. I was teaching at the
- Al-Magfirah Mosque in Cilangkap. It
- happened to be related to the issue of
- the teacher and the student, the issue
- of knowledge. There are differing views
- among scholars about who is more
- superior, the teacher or the student,
- the one teaching or the one learning.
- Indeed, some say that the teacher, the
- one who teaches, is more superior than
- the one who learns. But there are also
- those who say the one who learns is
- more superior than the teacher. Yes.
- However, what I...what should I call it
- ? What I say is that in certain
- situations, the teacher or the one
- teaching is more superior, and in other
- certain situations, the student is more
- superior. But in general, the teacher
- is more superior because why? The
- Prophet, peace be upon him, said this:
- "Be an 'alim.""Be a knowledgeable
- person." Meaning someone who teaches
- knowledge to others. "Or be a
- muta'allim." Or if you can't be a
- teacher, if you aren't a teacher, be a
- student. Be someone who learns. Now,
- what is meant by learning here is not
- just listening. Yes. But a student is
- someone who seeks knowledge with their
- ears, their eyes, and also their hands.
- Now, if you aren't a student, be a
- listener, someone who listens. So that
- means studying only with their ears. So
- some people call it "jiping," they say
- it's "ear-studying." Yes, that's the
- third one. The fourth is "or a
- supporter." If you can't be a teacher,
- can't be a student, and can't even be a
- listener, be someone who supports. Yes,
- supports. Someone who likes knowledge,
- likes religion. "Wala takun khamisan.""
- Wala takun khamisan." The Prophet said,
- don't be the fifth type. Already not
- teaching, not wanting to learn, not
- wanting to listen, not liking it, and
- even breaking up people who are
- studying. Yes. Then the assembly is
- also, what's it called? Ah. Locked up.
- Now, this is it. So what did the
- Prophet say? "Fatahlik." You will be
- destroyed if that's the case. Hmm. So
- this second person. They will
- constantly be seeking provision. Yes,
- like earlier, why did it come now? If
- only it were tomorrow, give me a chance
- to set things right first. Oh Allah,
- it's not that I don't want to die now,
- but my sins are still many, and my good
- deeds are few. Give me a chance, give
- me time to improve myself, increase my
- righteous deeds, and repent. Now, that
- is the second one. That’s how it
- should be. Now, moving on. Then Aisha (
- may Allah be pleased with her) said.
- Mother Aisha (may Allah be pleased with
- her) asked the Prophet, "O Messenger of
- Allah, will anyone be gathered with the
- martyrs?""Is there anyone who will be
- gathered on the Day of Judgment along
- with the martyrs, those who died in the
- way of Allah?" Even though they did not
- die as martyrs, they are gathered
- together with those who did. Is there
- such a person? The Prophet said. The
- Prophet replied, "Yes." Yes, there is.
- "Man yadhkurul maut fil yaumi
- wallailati' ishrina marrah." That is,
- someone who remembers death twenty
- times a day and night. Is this number
- 20 indeed the specific number set by
- the Prophet? Must it be exactly that
- amount, or does it indicate a general
- number? Meaning, many times. Just many,
- in essence, frequently remember death.
- Now, because why, brothers and sisters
- in faith? Look, if we I remember when I
- was in Rambutan, I had a neighbor who
- was, what you call it, he was sick.
- Then his wife said, "Sir, please try to
- fix the roof, it's leaking when it
- rains," and he got incredibly angry. "
- Can't you see I'm sick?" he said,
- getting angry. Now, this person had a
- huge hobby of playing dominoes, Sir. So
- if it was about dominoes, wow, he was
- extraordinary. Not long after, his
- friend came over with a domino set,
- inviting him to play. Even though he
- was sick and wrapped in a sarong, he
- played dominoes. Extraordinary, right?
- When a person already has a passion for
- something, that's what it's like. Now,
- imagine if this person knew he would
- die the next morning, do you think he
- would want to be invited to play? Yes,
- invited to play dominoes. I am sure he
- would not, he would not want to.
- Because he knows he will die tomorrow
- morning, he will use that night for as
- much worship as possible. He wouldn't
- even think about sleeping anymore. That
- is why Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, keeps
- many things hidden from us. Allah keeps
- secret when that, what is it, Lailatul
- Qadar is. Yes, Allah keeps it hidden.
- Why is it kept hidden? That Lailatul
- Qadar which has a value better than
- 1,000 months. So that we want to fill
- the entire nights of Ramadan with
- worship. If we knew that Lailatul Qadar
- fell on a certain date and it was set,
- we might only worship that one night
- all night long. After all, its value is
- better than 1,000 months, but because
- we don't know, it could be on the 1st,
- 11th, 21st, or other dates. So finally,
- we fill them all with worship. Because
- if we fill them with worship from the
- 1st until the last, we will surely fill
- Lailatul Qadar with worship. Even
- though we don't know which date
- Lailatul Qadar is, Allah also keeps,
- what you call it, hidden, regarding
- which sin will lead to the wrath of
- Allah. Whether it is a major sin or a
- minor sin, there is no explanation
- given. Now, why is that so? So that we
- avoid all sins, whether they are major
- sins or minor ones. Because it could be
- that God's wrath lies within a minor
- sin. That is why the Prophet reminded
- us like this: Look not at the smallness
- of the sin. If you commit a minor sin,
- do not look at how small the sin is,
- but rather at whom you are sinning
- against. Because it could be that God's
- wrath resides precisely in that minor
- sin. We do not know. Likewise, God
- keeps secret where His pleasure lies.
- Is it in major good deeds or minor good
- deeds? We do not know. Why is it kept
- secret? So that we perform all good
- deeds. Not just the big ones, but we
- should do the small ones too. Because
- it could be that God's pleasure
- actually lies in a small good deed.
- Listen to what we have heard: When Imam
- Al-Ghazali passed away, he was asked by
- someone who met him in a dream, "How is
- your condition?""Alhamdulillah, God is
- pleased with me.""What deed was it that
- made Him pleased with you?""Was it
- because of your fasting, your
- asceticism?""Your piety, your devotion,
- or because you wrote the book Ihya?
- None of those.""It only had something
- to do with the writing of the book Ihya
- .""When I was writing the book Ihya, I
- used a pen with ink." Yes. "As I was
- writing, a fly landed on my pen and
- drank the ink." Imam Ghazali noticed
- that the fly seemed thirsty. So, he
- stopped writing. He let the fly drink
- the ink. Once the fly was full and flew
- away, he continued writing. He felt
- touched and had pity for a single fly.
- And that, it turns out, was what made
- God pleased with Imam Ghazali. Consider
- Sheikh Junaid Al-Baghdadi when he
- passed away; it was the same. When
- asked by people, "Was it because of
- your piety?""Because of your Sufism and
- all that which made God pleased?""No.""
- But what made God pleased with me was
- that one day I was walking in the
- market of Basra.""I found a kitten that
- was shivering from the cold because it
- was all wet.""I saw it and felt touched
- , pitying it very much.""So I took the
- kitten with great care and wiped it
- with the robe I was wearing.""I wiped
- it and wrapped it in my robe so it
- would be warm.""I kept it until it was
- dry.""Once it was dry, I let it go."
- Subhanallah. It seems that was what
- gained God's pleasure. Just think of a
- deed like that. That deed may be small
- in our view, but in the sight of Allah
- Subhanahu wa ta'ala, it is truly
- extraordinary. And that is what brings
- about God's pleasure. That is why it is
- kept secret by God. So that we do all
- good deeds, no matter how small they
- may be. Because it could be that right
- here lies the pleasure of God. See.
- Likewise, God keeps secret the
- identities of His saints (Wali). No one
- knows whether someone is a saint or not
- . Yes. Why then is it kept a secret? So
- that we respect all people and do not
- belittle them. Because it could be that
- the person we have looked down upon is
- actually a beloved of Allah Subhanahu
- wa ta'ala. And when we honor a beloved
- of Allah, Allah is surely very pleased.
- Now, this also includes the matter of
- death. Allah keeps secret when we will
- die. When we die, Allah keeps it a
- secret. For what? So that we are always
- preparing ourselves. If death comes at
- any time, we are ready. That is why it
- is kept secret. If Allah had determined
- that someone dies at a certain age,
- then life would become chaotic. Fakri,
- if it was determined you'd live to 65,
- that means you have a few decades left.
- "Ah, there's still a long time," you'd
- think. You would act recklessly,
- committing any sin, and the country and
- the world would be in ruins. But by
- keeping it secret, it could be that I
- will die tomorrow. When about to commit
- a sin, one thinks, "What if I die while
- committing this sin? Oh, what a bad way
- to go." That is why we are told to
- always remember. And then al-isti'dad,
- to prepare. Now, the Messenger of Allah
- , peace be upon him, said, "Aksiru min
- dhikril maut fainnahu yamhush-dhunub wa
- yuzahhid fid dunya." Increase your
- remembrance of death. Because
- remembering death can, uh, "yamhush"
- means to spit out. Like food being spit
- out, it means it can remove sins and
- also lead to detachment from the world.
- Now, that is why there is the saying, "
- Kafa bil mawti wa'izha." It is said
- that death is sufficient as an advisor.
- Yes, as an advisor. This is why, Pak
- Hari, we as Ahlus Sunnah believe that
- visiting graves is a good deed, a
- sunnah from the sunnah of the prophets.
- Because of what? Because by visiting
- graves, we remember when we see those
- who have died. Not just remembering,
- but seeing those who are dead in their
- graves. And by doing so, we will
- naturally realize that we too will be
- like them. When someone is ill, we are
- told to visit the sick. When someone
- dies, we are told to offer condolences.
- When someone is buried, we are told to
- visit the grave. Why? When seeing
- someone sick, I realize I will also be
- sick like them one day. If many people
- visit someone when they are sick, it is
- because they are a good person. Imagine
- if they were a bad person; who would
- visit someone evil? Now, that is what
- comes to our mind. Even though we
- shouldn't do good just so that people
- visit us when we're sick, that's not
- the goal. But we learn that they are
- visited by many because Allah loves
- them. Why do people like them? Because
- they are good. Once they die, we offer
- condolences so that we realize we too
- will die. Then it is sunnah for us to
- accompany the body to the grave while
- reflecting, "Oh Allah." That is why our
- sunnah is to contemplate. If you are
- the one being carried now, it may be my
- turn to be carried tomorrow or the next
- day. If so many people are accompanying
- you now to, what is it called? to the
- cemetery. Will there be anyone to
- accompany me there when I die? Oh, my
- God. When we visit the graves, there
- are many people there who offer prayers
- . Later, when I die, will there be
- anyone to pray for me? It does not mean
- that we go to the cemetery to ask
- things from the people in the graves.
- The goal is what? To remind us of the
- afterlife and also to cultivate
- detachment from the world. It means
- that detachment is not loving the world
- . Wealth is not the issue. Even Prophet
- Solomon was rich, one can be rich but
- not be attached to wealth. Like that,
- yes. Now, this is a scholar named Rabi
- bin Husain. He wanted so much to
- remember death every day that he dug a
- pit in the middle of his house. Every
- day he would tie his neck with a rope
- and enter the grave pit he had built.
- Then he would say, "O," said Rabi. "Eh,
- Rabi said, 'O Allah, I am sure.'""O
- Allah, if You return me to the world, I
- will be a righteous person, I will be
- an honest person.""I will be diligent
- in worship and so on." Then he would
- get up. Once he had woken up. "Eh, Rabi
- , prove it, manifest now what you
- promised to Allah before the arrival of
- a day when, if you make the same
- request, it will not be granted." He
- increased his worship. In Tanah Abang,
- there used to be a Mr. Hari. I got this
- story from the late teacher, Mualim
- Syafi'i Alhazami. In Tanah Abang, there
- was a man, they say. He placed a
- tombstone in his room. The tombstone
- had his name written on it. Born on
- such and such a date, Jakarta such and
- such a date, died, it was left blank.
- Ah, it was empty because he wasn't dead
- yet. Now, that tombstone was placed in
- his bedroom. Every time he opened the
- door, the first thing he saw was that
- tombstone. That is what he did. And
- that tombstone was only used 30 years
- later. That means the tombstone stayed
- in his bedroom for 30 years. Now, why
- did he do that? Every time he saw the
- tombstone, he remembered that he was
- going to die. And this is what will be
- asked later. I shared this story with
- my students. Subhanallah. There was a
- student of mine, perhaps 10 years older
- than me, one of my congregants. His
- name is Mr. Tabrani, from Kampung
- Rambutan, yes. He used to work in
- Customs. Whenever he visited me, he
- would shake my hand, kiss it, and cry.
- And then he said, "Ustadz, I have
- already bought the shroud, I bought the
- cotton.""Then he called," he said, "his
- children and wife." He was a true
- Betawi, he said this, "Hey, when I die
- later, write it like this, okay? My
- name, my date of birth, and you just
- fill in the date of death," he said. "
- Here is my birth date, you won't need
- to buy a shroud later, I've already
- prepared the cotton.""That's how he was
- ." Every time we met, he would shake my
- hand and kiss it, I said, "Mr. Tabrani,
- it's not you who should kiss my hand.""
- I am the one who should kiss yours.""
- I'm younger, after all.""Ah, no, Ustadz
- ," he said, "you are my teacher." He
- would cry whenever he remembered it.
- Subhanallah, I felt ashamed. How could
- my congregation be like that? Perhaps I
- am the one who hasn't taught them well.
- Well, he was incredibly humble. Even
- though he said, "Oh God, Ustadz, my
- sins are already like that.""Yeah." He
- cried because he felt he had so many
- sins. That's why I asked, "Mr. Tabrani,
- " I said, "Between your sins and a
- mountain, which one is bigger?""My sins
- are bigger, Ustadz.""Compared to the
- earth?""My sins are bigger.""Compared
- to the sky, which one is bigger, my
- sins?" I didn't even know what the
- comparison between the sky and his sins
- was. I was just saying things. "Then,
- compared to Allah's Throne, are my sins
- bigger?" Then I said this, "What about
- compared to Allah's mercy?" and he just
- went silent. "Compared to Allah's
- compassion, which is greater?" He just
- stayed silent. Mr. Tabrani. I said, "If
- all the angels, humans, jinn, and
- animals were to have their mistakes
- recorded as sins.""And all those sins
- were gathered into one.""Compared to
- Allah's mercy, Allah's mercy is still
- far greater than the sins of all
- creation.""Especially just the sins of
- Mr. Tabrani, which are small compared
- to Allah's mercy." Because Allah's
- mercy is "Inna rahmati wasi'at."
- Allah's mercy encompasses all things,
- and we are a small part of those things
- . Do not despair. Do not despair of
- Allah's mercy. That is what I told him.
- That's why he was so accepting of it.
- Yes, I am sure he had a good end (
- husnul khatimah) and may Allah make his
- grave a garden from the gardens of
- Paradise. Yes. Well, that's it, Fahri,
- regarding the second point; next time
- we will discuss the third, which is
- about shortening one's hopes (tul
- al-amal). We will discuss that in the
- next meeting.
- With the hope that may Allah subhanahu
- wa ta'ala prolong our lives in worship.
- Allahu Akbar.
- Amin ya Rabbal Alamin. Alright, thank
- you Ustadz Ahmadzuli Khul for the
- enlightenment this afternoon. The theme
- was remembering death (dhikr al-mawt).
- May we become people who always
- remember death, brothers and sisters.
- Because according to the Prophet's
- hadith, the wise and noble person is
- one who always remembers death. Alright
- , Ustadz. Let's get right to it, Ustaz,
- to the questions that have come in.
- Many have asked via the WhatsApp number
- 0811999720. I will read the first one
- immediately, Ustaz, from Mr. Khairul in
- East Jakarta. Peace be upon you, and
- Allah's mercy and blessings, Ustaz.
- And peace be upon you, and Allah's
- mercy and blessings,
- Ustaz. When someone becomes lazy and
- pessimistic regarding worldly affairs
- because they frequently remember death.
- Is there something wrong in how they
- interpret this*zikrul maut*(remembrance
- of death), Ustaz? How should one
- properly understand this*zikrul maut*,
- Ustaz? That is all,
- yes. In the name of Allah, the Most
- Gracious, the Most Merciful.
- Remembering death is a very good deed,
- highly encouraged by the Messenger.
- Because by remembering death, as the
- Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam said
- , it can cultivate a sense of*zuhud*,
- meaning detaching oneself from, what
- you call it, being overly attached to
- the world. Right. Besides that, such a
- mindset can also erase sins. Because if
- a person remembers death, they will
- think twice before committing a sinful
- act. But that doesn't mean that by
- remembering death, we negate or remove,
- or eliminate our spirit to obtain our
- portion in this world. Because Allah
- Himself said*la tansa**nashibaka minad
- dunya*. Do not forget your portion in
- this world. Yes, do not forget your
- portion in this world. So, let's keep
- our spirits up. It’s just that
- seeking worldly things is limited to,
- what should I say? Fulfilling life's
- necessities in this world. How much do
- we actually need? Yes, it's like that.
- So it is a mistake if, because of*
- zikrul maut*, we then don't want to
- work, we don't want to, well, that's it
- .
- Yeah. So, the*zikrul maut*is good, but
- leaving behind one's obligation to earn
- a living, that is what's wrong. Yeah.
- It cannot be blamed entirely. No. Yes,
- keep doing*zikrul maut*. The*zikrul
- maut*is good. It's just that they are
- wrong to neglect their share in this
- world. So these two things go hand in
- hand, they remain in alignment. Our
- obligation to earn a living must be
- carried out. But if a person remembers
- death while earning a living, it is
- impossible for them to cheat. Let alone
- stealing, that won't happen. Why?
- Because they remember. So that is what
- it means. Wherever we are. The Prophet
- even said that someone who remembers
- death 20 times a day and night will be
- gathered with the martyrs.
- Yeah.
- That's right, 20 times.
- Does a merchant even have time for that
- 20 times? It means we should always
- remember at every moment. Every time we
- are about to do something, we remember,
- "Watch out, we will die, and there will
- be a reckoning from Allah for all our
- words and deeds," like that. So it
- doesn't mean just sitting around
- thinking about it; that's not what it
- means. It's not about dwelling on death
- , but remembering that we will die and
- that every action we take will have
- accountability. Allah knows best.
- Alright, the next question comes from
- Mr. Abdullah in Depok. Ustaz, peace be
- upon you, and Allah's mercy and
- blessings.
- And peace be upon you, and Allah's
- mercy and blessings.
- Several years ago, when my mother was
- on her deathbed, I was so distraught
- that all I recited to her was '
- istighfar', not the 'tahlil'. Since
- then, I have felt a sense of regret.
- Why did I not recite the 'tahlil' at
- that time? Please provide some insight
- on this, Ustadz.
- Alright. In the name of Allah, the Most
- Gracious, the Most Merciful. A person
- who knows is called 'alim', yes. A
- person who does not know is called '
- jahil'. 'Jahil' means ignorant. When
- your mother was passing or about to
- pass, you didn't recite the 'tahlil'(
- lailahaillallah) to guide her. Even
- though that is the sunnah, right,
- mental note.
- But why didn't you recite it? Because
- you didn't know. Yes, 'not knowing' is
- just another word for ignorance. It's
- just that we get angry when called
- ignorant, but not when we're told we
- don't know. Because we think not
- knowing is not the same as being
- ignorant. Even though, in reality, they
- are synonyms.
- Yes.
- So, was it wrong at that time? Allah
- does not punish or blame someone who
- does not know. However, at that moment,
- you wanted to do or say something good.
- Yes. And what you thought was good at
- that time was 'istighfar'. Was it wrong
- ? No, it wasn't. At that moment, you
- were not wrong and it will not be
- recorded as a sin.
- Like that. Even though, perhaps, you
- should have known better at the time.
- Yes.
- And I am sure that if someone were to
- pass away now, you wouldn't recite '
- istighfar' but would lead with 'talkin'
- because you know better now, right?
- Exactly. Regretting one's past
- ignorance is fine. It's good, yes.
- Yes.
- That's good. Because that will later
- become material for us to advise our
- children. "Don't let it happen, child,
- that you regret it later like your
- father did," something like that.
- That's already quite good, it's good.
- So, you don't need to be afraid of
- committing a sin or anything like that
- because it was not a sinful act. What
- you did was already good, given your
- condition at the time. But if you chose
- to do that now, well, that wouldn't be
- good. The best thing is indeed the '
- tahlil'. But having a feeling of guilt
- is something Allah likes more. Allah is
- pleased when someone feels guilty.
- Yes.
- Feeling guilty. And Allah is not
- pleased when someone feels they are
- right and even feels entitled. Yes,
- that kind of feeling is actually quite
- good. God willing, yes. Allah knows
- best.
- Yes. Alright, next is a question from
- Mr. Musawir. Ustadz, peace be upon you,
- and Allah's mercy and blessings.
- And peace be upon you, and Allah's
- mercy and blessings.
- Ustadz, at the moment of death, what
- will the Angel of Death look like
- before us? Please enlighten us, Ustadz.
- In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious
- , the Most Merciful. When one's soul is
- taken, there are four great trials for
- us, yes. One is the pain of having the
- soul taken. The second is the terror of
- seeing the Angel of Death.
- Hmm.
- The Prophet Ibrahim alaihissalam, when
- visited by the Angel of Death, asked
- through the Prophet Jibril, "Angel of
- Death, have you come to visit me, to
- pay respects, or to take my soul?" He
- said, "No, just a visit.""Ah, finally
- the Prophet Ibrahim said this, 'O Angel
- of Death, would you show me your true
- form?'""You will not be able to bear it
- ," said the Angel. "Come on, just show
- me," he said. "Show me.""Very well,"
- said the Angel of Death, "Now turn away
- .""He said, turn your back to me." The
- Prophet turned away. "Yes, now look."
- As soon as he looked and saw his true
- form, the Prophet Ibrahim immediately
- fell unconscious. Once he regained
- consciousness, the Angel of Death had
- returned to his human form.
- What did the Prophet Ibrahim say? "
- Angel of Death.""If Allah did not
- inflict any punishment, just seeing
- your form is already a truly terrifying
- torment." Now, this is only for people
- who are, what shall we call them? For
- those who are disbelievers, those who
- are rebellious. Yes. But for the
- believers, the righteous, it is
- certainly not like that. Yes, not like
- that. Because when the soul is taken
- from that person there are some, as in
- the Qur'an, "wa hinaidhin tanzurun"(at
- that moment you will be watching). And
- the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon
- him, also explained that a person will
- not leave this world. Yes, they will
- not depart, they will not leave this
- world. A person will not leave this
- world until they know their place of
- return and until they also know their
- dwelling.
- Whether it is heaven or hell. That will
- be shown first by Allah.
- That is the meaning of "wa hinaidhin
- tanzurun." Yes, in which surah?
- Al-Waqi'ah. That is why some people
- pass away with longing, smiling, in
- contentment. There are also those whose
- eyes stare in terror. Why? Because of
- what is shown by Allah. Yes...what is
- it... "Bima ghafara li Rabbi wa
- ja'alani minal mukramin." That was
- Habib An-Najjar when he was dragged and
- beaten by his people.
- Yes, how painful was that? So, Allah
- then showed him Paradise. By seeing
- Paradise, the pain he suffered
- disappeared.
- Allah wanted to help him. That's how it
- is.
- Yes.
- That is why he said, "Ya laita qawmi
- ya'lamun, bima ghafara li Rabbi...""If
- only my people knew," he said, "the
- glory that Allah has given me by
- showing me, what's it called, the
- forgiveness of my sins and the showing
- of Paradise, and everything else; that
- is how it is." So the pain of the
- throes of death is extraordinary. But
- later for the believers, God willing,
- it will be explained in the chapter
- later. So, the point is, this Angel of
- Death, when he arrives, can be
- terrifying, or he might not be.
- Yes.
- Yes. Now, it depends on our deeds.
- Yes. Like little children who are about
- to have their teeth pulled. Some are
- already crying because of the doctor,
- perhaps because they see the doctor's
- methods. But there are those little
- kids whose teeth have fallen out but
- they just stay quiet. Why?
- The dentist is clever, isn't he?
- Children are extraordinary
- yes. Actually, this is already a
- glimpse of the afterlife, especially
- regarding the angels later on.
- So if you, sir, do not want to be
- terrified, do not want to see the angel
- of death as something scary, then the
- answer lies with Mr. Musawir himself.
- Yes. Within ourselves, like that
- yes. Very well. God knows best.
- Yes. Next, from a servant of Allah,
- Ustaz, in Tangerang. Peace be upon you,
- and Allah's mercy and blessings, Ustaz.
- And peace be upon you, and Allah's
- mercy and blessings. Uh what is the
- best prayer for me before death comes,
- Ustaz? And is it permissible for us to
- pray for a good end (husnul khatimah),
- abundant sustenance, and sincere
- repentance beforehand? That is all,
- Ustaz.
- Yes. Yes, indeed, uh, that prayer is,
- uh, good. The Prophet once warned his
- companions, "Let not one of you wish
- for death because of an illness being
- suffered." Now, if you must ask for
- death, the Prophet said this, "
- Allahumma ahyini ma kanatil hayatu
- khairan li wa tawaffani idza kanat
- wafat li khairan." Yes. O Allah, keep
- me alive as long as life is better for
- me and cause me to die if death is
- better for me. The Prophet has already
- taught us that. If we want to ask for
- death.
- Don't ask, "O Allah, rather than being
- like this, just take my life." Don't be
- like that. Even if you must, the
- Prophet said, "If you ask for death,
- this is how you do it.""Like that
- earlier." O Allah, keep me alive if
- life is better for me and cause me to
- die if death is better for me. So in
- the end, if you live, it's a good life.
- And if you die, it's a good death. Now,
- you mentioned asking for a good end (
- husnul khatimah), that is good, yes.
- That's why you should increase that.
- Like Habib Abdurrahman, yes, in his
- Ratib there is, "Ya Allah biha, ya
- Allah biha, ya Allah bihusnil khatimah.
- " Yes, reciting that is, of course,
- good. Because our request to Allah is
- that Allah grants us a good end,
- because a good end is what determines
- whether we are successful or not, yes,
- not now, but at the end of our lives
- later. Whether we are unfortunate
- people or successful people, it is at
- the end of life, yes. God knows best.
- From Mr. Johar in Kalideres. Ustaz,
- peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy
- and blessings.
- And peace be upon you, and Allah's
- mercy and blessings.
- When we are sick, Ustaz, besides
- getting treatment, what prayers should
- be recited and what good deeds should
- be done? That is all.
- Very well. In the name of Allah, the
- Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. There
- are several hadiths that explain, yes,
- that if we are sick, we should recite
- Surah Al-Ikhlas 40 times. Whoever is
- sick and recites Surah Al-Ikhlas 40
- times, yes, then if they recover, or if
- they pass away, all their sins are
- forgiven. If they recover, all their
- bad blood or whatever is also replaced
- and also in
- uh, the forgiveness of Allah Subhanahu
- wa ta'ala. 40 times reading Surah
- Al-Ikhlas.
- Yes. Now, then in another hadith, it is
- to read the prayer of Prophet Yunus.
- Prophet Yunus.
- La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu
- minaz-zalimin. Yes.
- Now, if I suggest to my in-laws, I say
- this, "Well, if you are sick, just
- increase your reading of Al-Ikhlas.
- Read it 40 times. Later, after 40 times
- , read the prayer of Prophet Yunus. La
- ilaha illa anta subhanaka. Later, if
- Allah intends to heal, Allah will heal
- you quickly. If, for example, the
- illness leads to death, then Allah will
- erase all their sins. that is what is
- read. Likewise, when my mother was sick
- , my mother always read that. Besides
- the verses she had memorized, such as
- Yasin, Ar-Rahman, Waqi'ah, and Tabarak.
- Now, I said this," Mother, increase
- this, yes, Al-Ikhlas 40 times. Later,
- if done, switch to the prayer of
- Prophet, uh, Prophet Yunus 40 times. "
- Yes.
- Yes, that is a practice, a prayer.
- a practice that is recited, yes. Uh-huh
- . Yes, wallahu a'lam. Next is a
- question from Mr. Yusril, Ustaz. Peace
- be upon you, and Allah's mercy and
- blessings. Peace be upon you, and
- Allah's mercy and blessings.
- Uh, Ustaz, could you please explain
- about the disease of wahan and how it
- can afflict the people of the end times
- , Ustaz? Like that.
- Yes. Yes, the disease of wahan consists
- of two things. First, hubbud dunya (
- love of the world) and this is related
- to the second, waqaratul maut (hatred
- of death). they are afraid of death.
- And if a person already has hubbud
- dunya, then it can be said, certainly,
- it is certain they fear death. This is
- already a disease. Which currently,
- right now, has spread everywhere like
- this. In all layers, yes. in all layers
- , what is called hubbud dunya wa
- qarahatul maut, yes. Now, because of
- that, then with us doing a lot of
- tafakkur (reflection) earlier, that is
- looking
- tafakkur
- yes, uh, what is called remembering
- death. God willing, if a person
- remembers death, later, because the
- Prophet himself has already said, right
- .
- Yes.
- That remembering death will cause a
- person to then remember the afterlife
- and also be ascetic toward the world.
- Because if we remember death, well,
- that is what I said, if we knew we were
- dying tomorrow, tonight we would not
- sleep, if invited to commit sins, we
- would not want to, that is the
- influence of death.
- Yes.
- So, the reason why people are struck by
- the disease of wahan is because of that
- , forgetting death. Now, and it is very
- true that the Messenger of Allah said,"
- Aksiru min dhikri hadhthillat. "
- Increase your remembrance of death. Yes
- , but do not, because of remembering
- death, then we abandon our other duties
- . No, it is not like that, which I have
- already explained.
- yes. Maybe that is all for now, Mr. Ru.
- Very well, Ustaz. There was, there was
- a last question, a final message from a
- listener, they said please ask this to
- the Ustaz.
- Ustaz, please, what is the practice for
- heart purification, Ustaz?
- Yes.
- Lastly.
- Okay, bismillahirrahmanirrahim, there
- are several steps to purifying the
- heart; the first step is riyadah, and
- the second is mujahadah.
- Mujahadah, what is riyadah? Like this.
- To be clean, it has to be healthy,
- right? Meaning the heart, Mr. Ria.
- Yes.
- Our physical body, if we want it to be
- healthy, must be fed.
- Yes.
- Well, likewise with the heart.
- Yes.
- How about physical food? Well, it must
- be tayyib (wholesome). Eat what is
- tayyib, what is nutritious. Now, how
- about the heart? For the heart, it's
- not about being nutritious, but being
- halal. If it’s nutritious but not
- halal, the body is good but the heart
- is ruined. If it’s halal but not
- tayyib, the heart is fine but the body
- will be ruined. That’s why, how do we
- make the heart good and healthy, and
- the body healthy too? We are told to
- eat what is halal and tayyib. Halal
- relates back to the heart. Then what?
- Tayyib relates back to the body. Then
- is it enough just to eat to be
- physically healthy? No. Not enough. We
- also need exercise. Ah, that exercise
- is called riyadah. Running or whatever.
- Or swimming, then cycling, that is the
- exercise. Now, our heart is the same,
- it needs heart exercise.
- Heart exercise.
- Like that. Now, what is the hardest
- good deed for us to do? Oh, for example
- , if charity is the hardest, let's
- force ourselves every day, even if it's
- just a little bit, keep going. Imam
- Ghazali said the cure is only to do the
- opposite.
- The opposite.
- This is training yourself. Training
- yourself and then increasing your
- worship. Now, these are all the steps
- to clean the, what is it called, the
- heart so that later, what, the bad
- traits—the love of lying, deceiving
- people, envy, jealousy—Then what else
- ? Well, that, by itself, will later,
- well, it will decrease. With the
- disappearance of bad traits, our hearts
- will become clear, become clean, like
- that.
- That is through the aforementioned
- riyadah and mujahadah. Mujahadah means
- struggling.
- Yes.
- Yes. Mujahadah is struggling, and that
- is what we must do throughout our lives
- . Mujahadah is for our whole life.
- It’s not, you know, just for a month
- or two; it’s continuous, always.
- For life.
- Yes, exactly." Wa'bud Rabbaka hatta
- ya'tiyakal yaqin. "
- So, worship your Lord until certainty
- comes to you. What is meant by"
- certainty "here? Death.
- Yes. So, as long as we are not yet dead
- , we keep serving Allah. The effort is
- how to make ourselves, our souls,
- become clean. So that later we can be
- united, to gather with the Most Holy.
- Because it is impossible for the Most
- Holy to accept what is dirty; it must
- be pure. That is the way: riyadah and
- mujahadah. Yes, later there will be,
- what is it called, a discussion about
- it. There will be a discussion.
- Hopefully, Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala
- extends our lives in obedience to Him.
- Amin.
- May Allah guide our hearts to the path
- He is pleased with and loves.
- And may Allah adorn our hearts with
- noble character. May Allah cleanse our
- hearts from despicable character. And
- may Allah bestow His mercy, guidance,
- and direction upon us and our
- descendants, so we may remain steadfast
- in following His commands and avoiding
- His prohibitions. Rabbana taqabbal
- minna yaum hasanah akaraallahu
- sayyidina Muhammadin wa sallam.
- Alhamdulillahi rabbil alamin. Peace be
- upon you, and Allah's mercy and
- blessings.
